Ukraine art shows in City

An art exhibition of lacquer artworks created by a Ukrainian artist is on display at RMIT University Viet Nam at Sai Gon South in HCM City's District 7.

The works were inspired by the "colourful and sensuous nature of Vietnam" of Liubov Fedotova, the wife of the Ukrainian Ambassador to Vietnam.

Born in 1959 in Kazakhstan, she graduated from the Chinese linguistics faculty of China Pedagogical Institute in Russia. She lived and worked in Kiev.

Fedotova and her husband came to Hanoi in 2003. She started painting a year later at Professor Le Kim My's studio and has been working with lacquer since October 2005.

Fedotova's works depict Orthodox icons and are made using unique materials like silver, gold, and mother-of-pearl.

Highlights of the exhibition include Angel with Golden Hair (2006), Dialogue of Two Cultures-Viet Nam (2007), and St, Michael Cathedral-Kyiv (2008).

Fedotova says she respects and cherishes her Vietnamese teacher, Pro My, who helped the artist find her own individual style through the creative atmosphere of her studio and her encouragement of new endeavours.

"Painting for me is a great pleasure, a meditation, a complete devotion to the process of creating. On one hand, it is a chance to stay alone with myself and on the other to share with my close ones the spirit of exhilaration from creating," said Fedotova.

Fedotova's first home studio exposition took place in January 2006. She has also displayed her works at exhibitions organised by Hanoi's International Women Club in 2006 and in 2007.

Her works are contained in private collections in Ukraine, Brazil, the UK and Cambodia.

In addition to the Ukraine artist, the exhibition was opened by President of RMIT Viet Nam Michael Mann, Ambassador of Ukraine Pavlo Sultansky, and the honourary consul general of the Ukraine Consulate in HCM City, Vu Dinh Luyen.

The exhibition of lacquer painting is open to the public until Friday.
